West Craven Turbines 62-58 Chorley Cougars

Posted on December 20th, 2012

DSCF0348This was the second meeting of the season for these two progressing sides in the Hyndburn League. West Craven were likely favourites to win this tie as they took the points from the last meeting by securing the win 82-58, however, Chorley had very much improved since the last meeting. Despite only recording one win they showed real potential when competing in previous games such as their recent 1 point loss to Burnley Magpies.

Turbines also had two familiar players on the score sheet in this game as Oliver Hylands returned from Division 1 National League duty with  with Bradford Dragons and Phil Smith back from the University of Northumbria for Christmas was hoping to earn some minutes on court.

The Turbines started the game with regulars Marshall, Ireton, Robinson, Capps and the returning Hylands the bench provided opportunities for Widdup, Dawson and Smith. The scoring began with Turbines with veteran Renko Ireton going to the basket on the first offence as Turbines went 6-0 up before Chorley managed to score. This wasn’t to stay a one sided game for long as Chorley began to score from good transition with them having players that were keen to get on the break.  The first quarter saw Turbines and Cougars both level at 14-14.

The second quarter saw West Craven change defence to a less experimental 2-3 zone rather than a 3-2 zone. Some good points came from guard Capps going to the hoop and earning an “and 1” and also Smith distributing the ball around a well worked offence gaining him a good lane to the basket for what was likely the play of the game. The half time score was 33-26 to Turbines.

As the third began the Cougars displayed an excellent fight back to get right back into the game. The game began to change as it became an end to end game as Turbines forward Hylands and Marshall putting up some great points and gaining some strong rebounds which saw Cougars struggle to keep the pair out of the danger zone.

The last quarter started out slow but the offence began to show signs of scoring from both ends. Marshall adding to the scoring with some greatly executed moves to the basket and Widdup earning some good offensive rebounds putting in some good points towards the end of the game. Chorley had to shoot an array of 3 point shots that saw them chase the Turbines to the finish which turned out to be a thrilling finish with Turbines coming out on top 62-58.

A good way to end the year with a good record half way through the season with Turbines being 5-4. Turbines are back after Christmas with a tough fixture against LT United on the 9th of January.
