West Craven Turbines Ladies v Stockport LapwingsIMG_0082

West Craven Turbines Ladies were finally back at Marsden Heights on Friday night for their first home game of the season against Stockport Lapwings. However after an accident on the M60 and the away team stuck in traffic tip-off was delayed for 30mins and the game was to be played using a running clock.

When the game eventually got underway with a slight line-up change with leading scorer Mairead Kilbride unavailable, Zoe Starkie was back after missing the previous game. The Turbines started the game very positively as Katy Watson and Starkie were pulling a number of defensive rebounds early on. Accompanied by some aggressive moves to the hoop by Ashleigh Tattersall taking her to the free-throw line but unfortunately not being able to convert, it was Steph Jackson who got the team off the mark. As the home team demonstrated their improvements on defence and therefore competing well the 1qtr ended 2-6 in Lapwings favor.

The energy brought to the team in the 2nd qtr spearheaded by Starkie and Tattersall showed great improvement on both ends of the and saw Sarah Rowland getting her season tally off to a start with a jump shot off an offensive rebound. The Turbines still struggling to score saw trips to the line for both guards with Tattersall making one and a floater down the lane being the Turbines final scores of the half. The 2nd qtr saw rookie Nawal Asghar enter the game for the first time. Tough defence from Pickles and continued defensive rebounding from Watson kept the game just about in reach at the half ending 7-22.

With limited players on the bench, an excellent coast to coast move by Tattersall and Watson scoring off an offensive rebound were to be the Turbines only scores of the 3rd qtr now 11-37.

In the 4th again Tattersall and Starkie made some striking moves to the basket only to be fouled and not able to convert. After being encouraged by Coach Renko Ireton Rowland hit a baseline jump shot what she is clearly capable to doing more often capped off the Turbines scoring at 15pts. The final score being 15-55 to the Stockport Lapwings in probably the Turbines best performance so far looking much more composed and implementing things being done in practice things are looking quite positive for the young team. The Turbines MVP of the night was Zoe Starkie with 2pts, 10 rebounds and 5 steals.

The Turbines next game sees them take on Holy Cross Angels 2 at Marsden Heights Community College 6th Dec 7:30pm tip. We are always on the look out for new players of any standard if interested please contact mail@westcraventurbines.co.uk
