West Craven Turbines vs. Blackburn Phoenix 2

West Craven took to the court again this week looking for another win to extend their current record too three wins and no loses after beating a DSCF3359young Blackburn team the week previous.

The Turbines had a very similar squad to that of last week with the exception of small forward “Magic” Furga making a return on the score sheet, with the Turbines knowing that the team they faced was a very young development squad were targeting 100pts for the first time in the clubs history and Pete Marshall was set a target of scoring over 43 points and beating that of club record holder Oliver Hylands who was not available for this fixture.

The new comers opened the scoring on their first offence however very quickly lost their way as this did not last for long as Turbines Marshall was eager to get the ball an start his attacking onslaught. In the past Turbines have struggled in the 1st qtr so were focused on stamping their authority early on. Turbines also showed no slack as Gonzalez would dominate on the offensive boards and Robinson would be keen to once again get on the fast break ending the first qtr 7-24

The second qtr was pretty much the same with a team rotation allowing Widdup, Furga and Wiseman to come off the bench. Some good ball movement from guards Smith and Ireton gave Marshall plenty of opportunities to push the score out of reach of the young opponents end the half 13-53.

The third quarter started with Turbines easing up on the defence to get more opportunities offensively on the break. However, this enabled Blackburn to get some much-needed points on the board and take them above 20. With Marshall scoring from all areas on the floor and looking unstoppable Turbines already in a dominant position would lose a bit of concentration and allow some easy scores.

Going into the 4th the Turbines pressed the ball in the full court to allow the young and inexperienced Blackburn to turn the ball over. Good pressure ball from front men Robinson and Marshall to stop the inbound and force Blackburn to foul Marshall on the score to award him with a three-point play. However, the scoring did not pile up in the forth and the Turbines finished out the game at 95-35.

Turbines ran out easy winners against a young developing team, however, Turbines didn’t perform as they could have done with some lacking on defence and failing to take advantage of the opportunities they had. In order to beat the big teams in the league the Turbines need to play smart at both ends for 40mins accompanied by a much stronger effort from the players coming off the bench. MVP once again goes to Marshall for the smart defensive plays and devastating attacks at the basket that enabled him to break the clubs scoring record with 45pts.  The Turbines next take on Chorley Cougars who are also one of the few remaining unbeaten teams in the league on 23rd Oct 7pm.
