West Craven Turbines vs. Leyland Lions
Turbines once again took to the court against newly formed Leyland Lions playing them for the second time since the Turbines victory on the opening night of the season. The Turbines again had a short bench; however, the seven players able to play were the same as last week, with players hungry for victory to put behind their previous loss to Chorley Cougars. West Craven started out with Marshall, Ireton, Gonzalez, Smith and Robinson with Widdup and Capps coming off the bench.
The game started slow with both teams failing to score early in the first quarter. It was Lions to take the first points followed by a quick response from Turbines. The first period of the game was evenly matched however a string of scores from Marshall and Widdup entering the game off the bench would see the Turbines impose an 8pt lead 17-9 at the end of the first.
Turbines went into the second with a small lead and knew that they had to keep pushing to break ahead of Lions to take the game away which happened last time they met, however, the plan did not go the way the team in white would have like, as the Turbines would make four consecutive turnovers to see Lions receive six points on the fast break. This allowed Lions plenty of confidence to push on towards half time 27-25 to the Turbines.
The third quarter started with a re-focused Turbines team and some well taken scores from big men Marshall, Widdup and Gonzalez. Good ball movement that came from Smith and Ireton allowing the scores to happen for the forwards but the game was still in either team hands as lack of offensive rebounds allowed Lions to break and creep up on the score line 45-38
The fourth quarter was still going to be close with Turbines holding a short lead against Leyland. At this point Marshall proved to be a lot for the Lions as the opposing team switched off on defence allowing Widdup, Robinson, Capps, Smith and Ireton to make a team impact on the closing minutes of the game and each collect points and assists to take the game their way. Final score Turbines 72-59 Lions.
A close call for Turbines as a big lack in concentration could have been costly and they must play better for the full 40 mins against future teams such as Hyndburn and LT United. The MVP goes again to Pete Marshall for his domination on the offensive end, scoring 32 points also a another good scoring game for Dan Widdup. Turbines have no games fixed for this week; however, the Turbines ladies are in action for the first time this season as they travel away to last year’s league winners Holy Cross Angels.
