West Craven Turbines vs. LT United

This week saw West Craven take on league leaders LT United who had previously beat Turbines in a tough league clash just Two weeks earlier. This game was the preliminary round of the Cup and also the Turbines last game of 2013. Turbines again came short on the bench with just seven players and Pete Marshall unable to play.

Turbines started out in a man to man defence to counter LT’s ability to attack and pull apart a typical zone. The defence began to work over their usual zone; however, LT would take the early lead going 6 points clear before Widdup found shooting form to get Turbines scoring off to a start. A lack in defence on LT’s “Sy” repeatedly cut down the lane to give LT a comfortable lead, however, Turbines saw some big improvements on the offence with Smith and Widdup scoring consistently with well taken jump shots. Some transition defence from the leaders saw Turbines fall back before the end of the first quarter with the score at 10-28.

Turbines second quarter went very similar to the first with some good movement on offence but the defensive intensity still lack on the Turbines side. Some good points came from Gonzalez with some big rebounds and stick backs and Ireton with some central offence jumpers. The Turbines trailed at the half with the score 21-51.

The third quarter saw Turbines pick up the defence and match LTs offence with Capps distributing some good passes to Smith and Widdup to get some good scores, also a baseline cut from Roman “Dragon” Bradshaw to get on the score sheet in only his third game. Third quarter score stood at 38-73 to LT.

The fourth quarter saw the Turbines come to terms with the game as LT had took the game. This left some experimental work for Turbines to practice without pressure. Widdup sat down after doing a good job on scoring and adding 14 to the score sheet. This allowed Bradshaw more minutes on court. A few scores came from Gonzalez to take Turbines to 50 but LTs three point shooting, transition defence and slicing drives allowed them to take the game and progress to the next round. Final score 50-94.

An improvement from the last meeting of these two sides and Turbines will now be playing in the Hyndburn league plate having being knocked out of the cup. Some good work from Ireton, Widdup and Capps for providing Turbines with some good offensive plays and Bradshaw for his rebounds and his efforts on and off court. MVP goes to Smith for his leadership and his shooting form earning him 9 points.

This was the last game of the year for Turbines; however, the Turbine woman’s have two more games before the Christmas break in the Manchester League.
